The G (Green) Spot
Put it on the spot mate. Not just on the spot, but at the back of the spot, in a cross wind, at 120 yards, at night, in the rain! 3 rods that is ! Yawn. I know, it’s ridiculous isn’t it? But how many times have we turned up to a new water just to be accosted by one of the latest carp fishing Gurus handing out free advice on his local water. With the best of intentions, I am certain, god bless you Sir. However, I do find it very hard to stop myself laughing out loud on occasion. I really want to say; “You do know your talking bollocks Sir”. In a Michael Caine accent. Why should I present my bait on a clear spot exactly? Answers on a post card please. Give me one piece of scientifically proven evidence that carp prefer to find all of the food they require on barren spots, devoid of any aquatic life or protection. Carp must eat, leave your rig on a clear spot for long enough and yes, they will pick it up eventually. But clear spots are threatening to them. The inspection time can be hours if not days. You want a quicker bite, bigger carp, stick your rig in some Green stuff and leave it alone. Yes, before you all lose your minds, carp can be caught from clear spots, I agree. But only clear spots? Not in the clay bottomed margins full of leaves & caddis larvae then? Not in bulrush reed lined bays, in snags, under bushes, behind tree roots, in silt, up in the water, the list is endless isn’t it? Are you seriously telling me that if I see half a dozen carp splashing around in the margins at the other side if the lake, I should not move to them if I can, I should stay on my deserted little spot? Patches of weed and general Green areas hold a plethora of aquatic life. Larvae such as caddis flies, damselflies, dragonflies, mayflies. Bloodworm & Joker. Snails, the eggs of other fish like Tench, tadpoles, leeches and worms, water beetles, water boatmen, freshwater mussels to name a few. Green areas are teaming with food, natural protean packed carp food. You will always find big carp milling around in this area. 1. Scared to fish them? Don’t want to mess it up or look foolish in front of your mates? Don’t be, it’s all very simple. Pop a Green Weed Leader on, “vats ay leader, what looks liyke weed”. 2. Attach a small lead. 3. Tie a very short Running Rig of your choosing. (Running Rig allows the lead to be snagged and you will still get stunning bite indication). 4. Then attach a couple of plastic casters or a single piece of immortal corn, tiny wafter or pop up, to a size 8 Cryogen or similar very sharp strong hook. 5. Fill a very small PVA bag with a few casters, 6 pieces of corn, a few CC
Moore snails, raw fresh bloodworm in season or frozen in a little ground bait and a few micro pellets so that you don’t melt the bag. 6. Make it pretty, lick and fold down the tags ends etc. 7. Then, pop it straight in the middle of the weed, gently now, feel for ‘Nothing’, you won’t get a thumping-drop will you, you’re on The G Spot. 8. Leave it alone, do yourself a favour. This is a delicate small bait fishing situation, natural carp food is small, show me a 18mill caddis, snail? No, they do not exist, so do not go sticking a donkey chocking bright pink 18mill bait in your little bag, it will stick out like a sore thumb. Expect to catch a few big Bream, along the way. Secret I have converted an old 12 ft Jim Gibbinson Eclipse Carp Rod into a Carp Feeder by splicing a long Greys 2 oz quiver tip into it. Well Roger my rod builder did it. It’s a stunning bit of kit, and far better than my Delkims in this situation. I can tell the difference between a Bream bite, a twitchy Skimmer number and a Tench bite with ease. The slow heavy, steady pull round of a big Carp is unmistakable. Well usually that is, it still comes off the rest on occasion with a thump. Usually while I’m brewing up!! Oh, by the way, before there is a battle of the Big Boys about who started the trend for Big Carp on the Tip. I did in 2017. We have been at it for several years now very quietly. When it’s hard, the bite indication is second to nothing, apart from a swing tip. Bite alarms are just noise, they don’t tell you anything at all really. You can see the bite build on The Tip. Simply lift on anything that looks Carpy. The usual suspects will hang themselves anyway, and yes if your fishing very small baits in weed, you will be catching everything that swims. It’s called going fishing, which is very different to going camping with everything you own and a 3 carp rods. Tight Lines.
